Water Management Equipment for Civil Works

A key service we provide to contractors is the hiring of flood barrier equipment for dewatering construction projects. Please read on.

Canals

The Geodesign Barrier installed in a tidal storm water canal. The barriers allowed storm water to flow under the membrane during low tides and sealed on high tides to allow embankment repairs upstream.

The WIPP barriers were used to block two sections of a small stream to allow embankment work to be carried out. The stream water flow was pumped around the barriers.

Watergate Barrier installed in a small stream to allow the installation of a fish ladder downstream.

Boat Ramp

25m of Geodesign barriers were installed across the Otematata Boat Ramp to allow the extending of the ramp and repair of the existing ramp surface.

Silt Removal

Geodesign barriers were placed across a river to channel the water flow through a gap in the barriers, allowing the removal of silt behind the barrier. The silt was carried downstream to an area where it was removed with a digger. This method made it possible to clear high silt areas in the river where digger access was restricted by trees.

Silt Containment

The Geodesign Barrier was installed along the river edge to allow the containment of silt from the formation of fresh plain areas. There was no requirement to remove the water behind the barrier as the membrane kept the silty water contained behind the barrier to settle out into the stream.

Kahu Bridge

Location: Kahu Bridge, Christchurch
Contractor: McConnell Dowell
Duration: 3 months

35m of 1.25m high Geodesign barrier was used to allow the dewatering of the area under the bridge for contractors to carry out repairs to the underside bricks, which were cracked during the Christchurch 2011 earthquake. The barrier was firstly deployed on one side with a scaffolding platform installed to allow access to the higher parts of the bridge then re-established on the other side to complete the repair work.

Riverlane Stream Upgrade

Location: Waiuku, Waikato
Contractor: Dempsey Wood
Duration: 3 months

The Riverlane stream was upgraded with clearing of shrubs and debris from the stream banks and installing gabion rock filled cages and geo textile and loose rock covering. 80 metres of the 1.25m high Geodesign Steel Barrier was used to divert the stream to allow the bank work to be carried out as well as controlling silt contamination. Riddell Rd Culvert Upgrade

Location: Waiuku, Waikato
Contractor: Dempsey Wood
Duration: 3 months

A culvert upgrade was carried out under Riddell road in Glendowie. 10 metres of the 1.8m high and 7 metres of the 1.25m high Geodesign Steel barrier was used to block the tidal flows up to the culverts to allow the works to be carried out. The barrier also allowed the storm water that flow from the upstream side to pass under the barrier at low tide levels.

Hydroelectric Generator Installation

Location: Marakopa, Waikato
Contractor: Dairy Tech
Duration: 3 months

40m of the 1.8m high Geodesign Steel Barrier was used to create a dewatered area for installing the intake of a small scale hydroelectric generator. This site proved to be a challenge due to the nature of the sub surface water flows which resulted in a wider membrane being installed to reduce seepage into the below river level intake area.
